Retail Inventory
There don't seem to be any low-cost, easy-maintenance inventory systems for a small business owner / retailer. There must be a ton of folks out there (like my brother) who are opening shops where they are the sole employee, and they are having to track all of their retail stock by pen-and-paper. They have neither the time nor the energy to set up an in-house inventory management system.

Seems like this is a market ripe for some sort of Backpack-style, thin web app for people who just want to track their stock. You might run into some problems running a Point-of-Sale application that has to connect to the Internet every time you ring someone up, but that's more of a scalability issue.

But, um, it will have Ajax and all of the retailers can link to their friends' stores.

Can I have my funding now?

By the way, if you see a Jen Freeman wandering the halls, say hi for me.

That would be all well and good if I worked at Jobster, but I do not...

But, since they are now flush with cash, it's tempting to apply for a job.

We discussed the cons of this already. But I may have forgotten to mention one other thing. You say "They have neither the time nor the energy to set up an in-house inventory management system."

They also don't have the time nor the energy to enter in ISMNs/ISBNs/Bar Codes - if your system is feature rich enough that's ALL they'll have to enter - let alone all the pertinent information about each item.

You're going to need some sort of quick way to scan in the bar codes so your system will fill out that information for them. Not easy to do when everything is server side.

Solutions... a smart client scanning app that comes down a la Click Once and only exists long enough to get the job done. But... you need hardware to scan. It might help to get in good with the guys working at Zoka who are scanning with the iSight in their app. You might be able to schmooze with them and then get some genius developer to write the same sort of thing for your smart client.

Then again, the guys at Zoka are lucky in that they only have to make sure their scanning/image recognition app works on one type of camera.

The ability to quickly enter data is gonna be your bottle neck. Along with the other things we talked about. IMHO. We were looking at setting up a book store and a lot of the people we talked to said that inventory takes up an insane amount of time.

At the very least make sure your app can do bar code look ups so they could just sit there and go through stack after stack of items and typing in the bar code and the number in stock.

Eh, it may work. Certainly it will if you have enough buzzwords. That might keep you afloat long enough to sell it to someone for millions. =)

(it's the website for the National Retail Federation)
They discuss different technologies and might have something to help your brother.
At the very least, he might just call them up and ask for advice.
